Website Redesign: Know When You Need It
August, 2002

By Dave Cintron
Art Director

After five and a half years in the business of designing and promoting websites, we are just now starting to get requests to redesign or refresh some of the websites we originated. (We frequently redesign or upgrade sites others have designed.) We thought this might be a good opportunity to consider when a site needs a redesign. Some indications:

Change in company identity. Obviously, changes in your organization's logo, colors, mission or audience would dictate an equivalent change in website design. This happens often when a company changes ownership or affiliation and logos and colors need to match.

New photography or printed literature. You may have created new content that could be used to update your website. In most cases, website photos can be greatly improved. It is likely important that your website design changes to match to overall look and impression of any new literature. See TheLiberty.HeatherHill.org for an example of a site we redesigned, after the assisted living facility was built, to better correspond with the interior design and actual photos of the facility.

Your website is not attracting enough targeted visitors. There might be mechanical reasons the site can't be found in search engines or linked to from other sites. Avoid using frames and page redirects.

Your website does not engage visitors. Consider adding interactive features such as discussion forums, ask the expert forums, register-for-access content, contests or quizzes. In particular, popup windows can immediately grab the visitor's attention and lead them into some interactive feature. See www.HillAndThomas.com to see an interactive quiz.

Competitors launch better sites. Part of planning a website project is reviewing the competition and producing something that stands out. Over time, others could leapfrog your design or content and you need an update. See www.Abanaki.com for an example of a website we freshened up in response to competitor sites.

Your website does not seem "fresh." Remember that your site might not seem fresh to you, but it's all new to first-time visitors. One quick way to add some timeliness to your site is to add news headlines, either from news on your site or third-party industry news feeds. Another way is to feature upcoming events on your home page. See examples:

Your website is getting bigger and hard to navigate. Consider adding a site map or text search feature, two additional ways to navigate the same site. See search features at:
