Internet Marketing Principles

Years ago, we created 6 Internet Marketing Principles that still stand true today. Whether you are creating a new website or trying to promote an existing one, these Principles will help guide the process along:

1. Know your objectives.

Being online to appear progressive is as good a reason as any, but any accomplishment beyond that takes time, planning and targeted promotions.

2. Do something online that can't be done off-line.

Even a website version of your brochure can add up-to-the-minute news, links, interactivity, sounds, voice-overs or some customizing feature that can't be matched in print.

3. Just being there isn't enough.

Like any new venture, a website needs promotion in print, advertising, press, direct mail, newsletters, tradeshows, word of mouth, directory listings, and more.

4. Don't expect your website to be profitable.

Most tradeshow exhibits aren't either. Like an exhibit, your website can raise your profile, generate goodwill, strengthen existing business relationships, and collect and qualify sales leads.

5. Base your online business on your off-line business.

Creating a new venture specifically for the Web is a risky proposition. View the Web as an extension of your current business procedures and relationships.

6. Impress, don't dazzle.

Visitors judge your website for its usefulness to them, not its technical or graphical achievements. Having a list of related online resources is a much better inducement to return than is an unrelated animated graphic.
